What Is Yoga 

Yoga is about connecting the mind and the body. Man’s Presence is physical, mental, and spiritual; yoga helps in the balanced growth of these three. Some people find yoga quite easy, but yoga is much more than that. However, many people consider yoga to be just a physical exercise, where people use complex ways to twist, stretch, and breathe.

History of Yoga

 There are four major Vedas in the hierarchy of Vedic knowledge - Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajurveda, and Atharva Veda. This is followed by four sub-Vedas - Ayurveda, Arthaveda, Dhanurveda, and Gandharva Veda. It is followed by six appendages or components, - education, Kalpa, grammar, nirukta, hobbies, and astrology. They were again categorized into six sub-components, - Nyaya, Vaishek, Sankhya, Mimamsa, Vedanta, and Yoga.

Yoga is a part of Vedic literature which was edited by Maharshi Patanjali five thousand years ago. He has explained eight parts of yoga. Their names are- Yama (Code of Social Conduct), Niyam (Personal Ethics), Asana (Physical Status), Pranayama (Life Energy), Pratyahara (Concentration of Senses), Dharana (Focusing in One Place), Dhyana and Samadhi ( Merging into the self). Yoga involves different philosophies. Such as Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, Hatha yoga, Raja Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Shiva Yoga Nada Yoga, Laya Yoga, and many more.

Asanas are a part of the Hatyoga tradition. Nowadays, yoga is associated with purely physical postures. But the central teaching of yoga is to maintain a steady state of mind. In Hatha Yoga, progress is made on physical and mental levels through asanas. The various forms of yoga are like wheel saws and are equally important for the overall development of a person. Hatha Yoga gives you physical fitness, while other types of Yoga give you knowledge and devotion etc.




Types of Yoga 

There are many styles of yoga and no style is more honest or superior to others. The different types and styles of yoga include the following. The main yoga types are as follows.

 

 

Raj Yoga- Raj Yoga, which is further divided into eight parts, is also called Ashtanga Yoga. The practice of yoga asanas is a fundamental part of the Raja Yoga system for balancing and integrating these various methods.
